Location
Penang
Scope
Architecture
Status
Completed (Phase 1 & 3)
The enhancements made to the Lower Station were envisioned to provide an exquisite experience for visitors at the iconic landmark. Among the notable improvements to the development is the addition of a retractable roof—a flexible feature which not only offers shade for the open space but also ingeniously preserves the captivating panorama of Penang Hill and the railway. The roof is cleverly designed with layers of material which also emanates a gentle ambiance reminiscent of sunlight filtering through lush foliage during the daytime.
To further alleviate visitors’ experiences, the Lower Station is furnished with commercial spaces and informative galleries, featuring stunning artworks painted by talented artists such as Thomas Powell and Esther Geh. Encircled with a spiral staircase that leads to the viewing docks on the first floor, we purposefully placed the artistry by Fuan Wong, which incorporates the re-use of old funicular parts and blown glass, resulting in an intricate and exquisite piece that stands tall at the Lower Station. These attractions serve a dual purpose: prevent overcrowding and maintain visitors’ excitement as they await their ascent uphill.
